Lviv Social Resilient City: Urban Density Lab Ukraine 2022
Design Programme in the Master of Architecture
Winter Term 2022-23

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the city of Lviv (730,000 inhabitants before the war) has become a destination for countless displaced people and thus fulfils an important role as a so-called "back-up city". The challenges are enormous: the city must develop resilient structures in the short, medium and long term to fulfill the most urgent needs of its population. 

The design programme deals with the concrete urban planning challenges of Lviv as a socially resilient city on the basis of 2 locations:

Rehabilitation Quarter Zboishcha 
Urban planning concepts are to be developed for an area of about 18 ha in the vicinity of the two large clinics in the Shevchenko district (Clinica Communal Emergency and Communal Childrens Clinic). The leading function of this neighbourhood will be a rehabilitation centre for war invalids in spatial-functional connection with the two clinics. Further requirements are: training centres for health personnel as well as housing and educational facilities for their families. 

Riasne Neighbourhood: "Social Housing" and "Productive City
The suburban district of Riasne is characterised by residential typologies and commercial use. A 9 ha area owned by the municipality is to be developed for people with war experience. The objectives include mixed forms of living (individual, communal, assisted, sheltered, etc.) and working and for so-called "innovative milieus" (creative industries, start-ups, IT businesses, cultural production, etc.).

The Design Programme Lviv Social Resilient City Urban Density Lab Ukraine 2022 is undergoing and involves approx. 25 students and teachers from both partner universities from September 2022 to January 2023 in cooperation with the Urban Planning Department of Lviv.
